We are a small farm in central Kentucky, located about 4 miles south of Brandenburg, KY. Our herd numbers around 20-30 animals and we try to freshen no more than 25 does each year and maintain 1-4 bucks on our farm. We find that we can manage this number reasonably well and have enough goats in the herd to make good genetic progress. We raise purebred Nubians with the exception of one American Nubian bloodline that dates from our founding herd. Herd health is maintained by prevention as much as possible. Our goats are abscess and CAE free. We usually test for CAE every 3-4 years. We are due to test this year. All the animals on the farms have been raised on heat treated colostrum and pasteurized milk. Prior to our move to Kentucky, we were certified and accredited. We are starting that process again this year when we apply for show papers and expect no problems. We are starting the process this fall of getting our herd's Scrapie certification. We have obtained our national herd ID number and are in the process of filling out the paperwork for the state vet inspection. We have used two herd names, in the past our herd was known as Stoney Forest. In 1999 we changed our herd name to KB Farms. We showed heavily in the early 1990's but school, work, move to a new state, new jobs for both of us, plus a new addition to our family have not seen us show in the last four years. The last show we attended was the KY State Fair in 2000. At that show we were named Premier Nubian Exhibitor. We attended three National shows in the 1990's and did well. Our highest placing kid was 3rd and our milkers were 5th and 8th respectively. We feel that we have a much better, consistent herd now and really want to get out and see how they do against other herds. We applied for LA this year, but the dates slipped and Cheryl ended up on Reserve Duty during the time appraisal was going on, so we canceled. Hopefully, we'll get to appraise next year.
